Virgin pumpkin seed oil is an edible oil with a green color and a mild, nutty taste. To extract the pumpkin seed oil from the pumpkin seeds, the seeds are cold-pressed mechanically in a small spindle press at a gentle temperature of around 35 °C. The special thing about this production method is that the pumpkin seeds are not roasted beforehand, unlike is generally the case in Styria.

We also offer roasted pumpkin seed oil at our oil mill. For the production of roasted pumpkin seed oil, around 30 percent of the pumpkin seeds are roasted before cold pressing. After the roasting process, they are mixed with unroasted, virgin pumpkin seeds and processed into oil in spindle presses. The virgin pumpkin seed oil contains high-quality fatty acids. In particular, it contains vitamin E, which helps to protect the cells from oxidative stress. Make sure you eat a varied and balanced diet and lead a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to its special composition, pumpkin seed oil is used in cooking and cosmetics. Pumpkin seed oil will keep for up to a year if stored properly, protected from heat and sunlight.

In September 2020, we welcomed a film crew from NDR to our oil mill. In the report Pumpkin farmers in harvest fever, the special features of the oil pumpkin and pumpkin seed oil production in our manufactory are described.

The oil pumpkin from Styria

Oil pumpkin from StyriaBright yellow with green veins: the Styrian oil pumpkin.

Not all pumpkins are the same: from the butternut pumpkin to the Hokkaido pumpkin, the nutmeg pumpkin, the patisson pumpkin and many other varieties, the variety of pumpkins is almost uncountable. The pumpkin seeds of the so-called oil pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo var. styriaca) are used to produce pumpkin seed oil. This is a variety of pumpkin that was cultivated in Styria at the end of the 19th century and was only known there until the 1970s. Compared to many other pumpkin seeds, the seeds of the oil pumpkin are not cream-colored to white, but greenish. The oil pumpkin itself usually has a yellow-greenish skin and can be clearly distinguished from the Hokkaido pumpkin.

In the fall, the time has come: the ripe oil pumpkins are harvested using special pumpkin harvesters. The seeds are then removed from the pumpkins, washed, dried and cleaned. They are then pressed at Ölmühle Solling to produce delicious pumpkin seed oil, which is not only indispensable for pumpkin soup and winter salads, but also makes desserts such as vanilla ice cream a delicacy.

Our pumpkin seed range

Cashew-pumpkin seed pesto

The finely ground organic pumpkin seed flour is another product that is made from Styrian pumpkin seeds in our factory. For this, the previously de-oiled seeds are ground in a mill and processed into a uniform flour. Our pumpkin seed flour also contains around eight percent pumpkin seed oil. It also has a high vegetable protein content of 62 g and around 13 g of fiber per 100 g. The flour has a natural green color and, as it contains no gluten, is an ideal alternative for baking bread and rolls.

The green pumpkin seed coconut spread is purely plant-based and consists of just two ingredients: Organic coconut oil and organic pumpkin seed oil. The polyunsaturated fatty acids in the roasted pumpkin seed oil complement the spectrum of saturated fatty acids in the coconut oil. Coconut oil contains around 50 percent of the valuable lauric acid.

A real favorite in our range is our cashew pumpkin seed pesto. It is lovingly made by hand from cashew and pumpkin seeds, as well as Parmesan cheese. Other ingredients include roasted onions, a hint of apple and roasted pumpkin seed oil. The organic pesto not only tastes great with pasta or as a spread, but also goes well with potato salad. It is also delicious as an ingredient in dressings for leaf salads.

Usage

Virgin pumpkin seed oil is ideal for use in hot and cold dishes - for example in salads, soups, sauces, cheese, meat and vegetable dishes and with vanilla ice cream. Pumpkin seed oil is not suitable for frying due to its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

from Boris Birneder at 11.01.2021

from Brita Marxsen at 04.12.2020

An organic farmer shows the offspring
how it's done

Cold-pressed, virgin pumpkin seed oil is extremely popular with connoisseurs due to its intensely nutty, mildly spicy taste.
A particular specialty is pumpkin seed oil made from the seeds of the Styrian oil pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo var. styriaca), a variety of pumpkin that was cultivated in Styria at the end of the 19th century and was only known there until the 1970s.

Today, the intense dark green oil is becoming increasingly popular, especially among men . The pumpkin seeds that we use to produce our virgin pumpkin seed oil at Ölmühle Solling are also grown in Austria, by organic farmer Franz Romstorfer from Raggendorf.

Every spring, we decide together how much we need and how much acreage is required - this creates planning security for the farmer. In the fall, the time has come: the yellow fruits are harvested with special pumpkin harvesters (yes, they exist!). The seeds are then removed from the pumpkins, washed, dried and cleaned. And then they are quickly transported to Weserbergland so that we can press the tasty pumpkin seed oil from them at Ölmühle Solling, which is almost indispensable not only for pumpkin soup and winter salads.
