It contains special substances such as silymarin. This substance has the ability to strengthen cell membranes, which are rarely found in modern nutrition, as well as vitamin E. Milk thistle oil is highly valued in folk medicine as a "liver plant". Due to its mild taste, milk thistle oil is ideal for salad dressings and breakfast cereals.

The milk thistle plant

Milk thistle (botanical name: Silybum marianum) grows to a height of one and a half meters. Like chamomile, it belongs to the composite family. The flowering plant can be recognized by its purple flowers and spiny leaves with white spots. It has a branched stem. Its flowers can be recognized by their delicate purple colour and are surrounded by pointed bracts. The fruits of the milk thistle contain a fat-rich oil consisting mainly of fatty acids such as linoleic and oleic acid. The milk thistle plant belongs to the Asteraceae family. The plant with the purple flowers blooms from June to September. It grows in southern Europe, North Africa and western Asia, preferably on dry soils and roadsides.
