Borage - a native herb

Borage seeds

Borage (Borago officinalis) is a typical garden herb. The plant with the hairy leaves and pretty little blue flowers is also known as Blue Sky Star, Heart's Delight, Little Love's Eye and Good Cheer Flower. Another name is cucumber herb, because the leaves have a characteristic cucumber flavour. Borage is also one of the herbs in the classic Frankfurt green sauce.

Precious gamma-linolenic acid

Valuable borage oil is pressed from the seeds of organically grown plants. When you buy borage oil, make sure that, like our oil, it has been gently cold-pressed and has not been deodorised or otherwise treated. Borage seed oil is characterised by the fact that it has the highest content of gamma-linolenic acid of all known oils: About 21 g per 100 g. (Other important sources of this important fatty acid are evening primrose oil (about 10 g per 100 g) or hemp oil (about 3 g per 100 g). It also contains saturated fatty acids, oleic acid and about 38 g per 100 g of linoleic acid. Fatty compounds include vitamin E, flavonoids and tannins.

Free from undesirable substances

Organic borage oil contains only 1-4% of the undesirable erucic acid, well within the 5% limit for edible oils. Cold-pressed organic borage oil also contains no liver-damaging compounds (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) from the flowers or leaves. Borage seed oil is greenish-yellow in colour and has a slightly acidic, almost "scratchy" taste. Enjoy it pure by the spoonful. Its high gamma-linolenic acid content makes it ideal for external use on dry and sensitive skin.

Usage

Enjoy it straight from the spoon or mix it with other oils in the kitchen, for example in a cucumber salad dressing. Borage oil must not be heated to destroy its valuable ingredients. Due to its high gamma-linolenic acid content, organic borage oil is an excellent skin care product for external use, and the high-quality, freshly cold-pressed oils from Ölmühle Solling are foods for a conscious and enjoyable diet.
